Automotive Manufacturer – Window Seal

Challenge:

The manufacturer – a prominent European automotive company – invited us to develop a lighter, smaller seal for truck windows. It had to be ready in a few weeks, with the New Zealand Christmas holiday falling in the middle of the period!

Solution:

We developed a co-extruded product that delivered all the required performance characteristics. It had a low-friction outer layer so the glass could slide over it easily, backed by a highly flexible layer to keep the seal tight against the glass, and then a rigid layer for mounting.

Result:

We delivered our working prototype within five weeks. The manufacturer then revealed that they had their own development team as well as a US supplier working on the problem for 18 months, and neither had achieved a working result yet! We have since applied this technology to other products with both friction and elasticity requirements, e.g. sliding and hinged doors.
